Children's Religious Education

The Unitarian Universalist faith doesn’t pretend to give children all the answers to the big questions. Unitarian Universalism puts its faith in people's ability to explore the unknown together. - Terry Stafford

What Are the Goals of Children’s Religious Education?

Wildflower Church’s religious education program recognizes that parents are their children’s primary religious educators. While supporting parents in that role, the Children’s Religious Education Team strives to provide a meaningful R.E. program that makes a positive difference in children’s lives and encourages them to:
  • Acknowledge and pay attention to the spiritual part of life
  • Develop a foundation of knowledge to evaluate possibilities in terms of spiritual paths
  • Develop their own religious and spiritual beliefs and path.

What Ages of Children Do We Serve?

Our Children’s R.E. program serves children ages 3 through 18 years. Child Care is provided during the Sunday worship service for children 1-5 years of age. Children ages 3-4 may begin in the Pre-K class when they are developmentally ready. Currently, infants remain with their parents.

What Happens on Sunday Mornings?

Children and youth stay with their parents for the first 15 minutes of the worship service, which begins at 10:30 a.m. After the congregation “sings the children and youth out,” teachers lead them to their own classes. Children and youth meet in five groups (Pre-K, grades K-2, grades 3-5, grades 6-8, and grades 9-12). The children’s program ends at about 11:40 a.m., usually 10 minutes after the Worship Service ends. Childcare begins at 10 am and continues until 12pm. Children attending childcare do not have to begin in the service. To promote child safety, two adults are present in childcare and all classes.

How Do Children Get Started in R.E.?

Before your child's first Sunday in the religious education program, please register him/her by filling out a Children’s R.E. Registration Form, which you’ll find on the Information Table. Parents are always welcome to visit the R.E. and childcare classes.

Which Class Does my Child Belong In?

One question many people have is, “Which class does my child belong in?” The RE Team is happy to help guide you in finding the best “fit” in terms of peer relationships and curriculum content. If you have a preference or a question, please let us know. Parents are welcome in the classroom anytime!

Are There Community-Building Opportunities for Families?

Yes! Many families come to church looking not only for worship services and religious education, but also for a sense of community. Our church offers many family-friendly opportunities for getting to know one another better. Participating in social-action projects gives families another way to connect with other church members while helping the larger community. Check out the Order of Service on Sunday, the church’s email announcement list, and the monthly newsletter for more information about fun-and-fellowship and social-action events.

How Can I Help with the Children’s R.E. Program?

The Children’s Religious Education program depends heavily on volunteers, with support and oversight from the Board of Trustees. As Wildflower Church grows and blossoms, so will our program. We need parents and other interested adults to share their visions for children’s religious education and their skills: story-telling, music, teaching, organization, you-name-it! Everyone is invited to join us at our monthly meetings.
