Social Justice Videos Available for Loan! Wildflowers are encouraged to view them individually or get together a group of other Wildflowers - or friends or family members - to watch and learn in a relaxed way about important social issues that relate to our values.

Unitarian Universalist Social Justice Websites:

  • UU Service Committee-- Provides a wealth of information and action opportunities on international social justice issues. 
  • UU Ministry for the Earth-- Describes UU efforts to heal the environment and address issues such as global warming.
  • UU United Nations Office-- Outlines actions UU's are taking to support the United Nations and international programs.
  • UU Peacemaking Website-- Provides information on the 2006-2010 Peacemaking Study/Action Issue program.

Alternative Gift Giving

Dread the hassle of trying to find meaningful gifts for people that don't need anything? Consider alternative gifts that add to peace, justice, and sustainability in the world.

Sustainable Charity Gifts:

  1. Buy a llama or other livestock on behalf of your loved ones from Heifer International, www.heifer.org,  800-422-0755
  2. Give a gift of hope through Alternative Gifts International at www.altgifts.org,  800-942-2243, which seeks to “nourish and sustain a more equitable and peaceful global community.”
  3. Are you an animal lover?  Consider "adopting" one of 91 species through World Wildlife Fund at  worldwildlife.org/gifts, 800-CALL-WWF.
  4. Give a gift of service through the SEVA Foundation at www.seva.org. Seva Foundation supports programs in health and wellness, community development, environmental protection and cultural preservation in poor areas.
  5. Make a loan through Kiva at www.kiva.org.  Kiva's mission is to connect people through lending for the sake of alleviating poverty. 

Low-Cost and Sustainable Gifts:

  1. Homemade gifts – Check out websites like www.family.go.com or www.betterbudgeting.com/homemadegifts.htm for  ideas.
  2. Recipe Book – Give a set of your favorite recipes
  3. Edibles – Examples:  gourmet olive oils or vinegars, nuts, candies, fruits.
  4. Plant Cuttings
  5. Mixed Tapes/CDs – Make a sound track of favorites that you think your loved one will enjoy.
  6. Used items from second hand stores. Giving an item an extra-life helps reduce our dependence on new resources.
  7. Coupons for non-material gifts – offer a back rub, child care, yard work
  8. Look for gifts that:
    • have recycled content
    • are produced locally
    • are made of organically grown materials
    • bear the ‘FairTrade' logo - Ten Thousand Villages, 1317 South Congress, 440-0440 has beautiful and inexpensive Fair Trade gifts.
