Common Security Club

Welcome to the Common Security Club @ Wildflower Church!

During 2009, our nation felt the full brunt of the economic meltdown.  Unemployment exceeded 10% nationally, with many states hit even harder.  Those still employed faced reduced hours, mandatory time off without pay, or reduced salaries.  The bursting of the housing bubble left many with homes worth less than what is owed on them.  Local and state governments were forced to cope with reduced tax revenue and massive budget shortfalls.  Many people in or near retirement faced decimated retirement savings.

Despite the promises of better times ahead, Americans are rightfully concerned, and face great uncertainty about their future.  How will we respond to these economic and ecological challenges?  Do we face these challenges alone, or do we come together to create a new future for our economy and our country?  In a time when many of us do not even know our next-door neighbors, can we rebuild community and, in turn, strengthen ourselves?

The Stewardship Committee, in partnership with the Adult Programming Committee, brings to Wildflower Church and our south Austin community the Common Security Club (CSC).  This pilot program will bring together upwards of fifteen interested individuals in a six session series featuring education, discussion, and social action.

How is the Common Security Club structured?

Common Security Clubs have three components.  They are:

Learning: Through shared readings and online videos, participants will examine the roots of the current economic crisis, and how we can move forward towards a sustainable and just economy.

Mutual Aid / Local Action: Participants will reflect and discuss what makes them secure, and what we can do communally to increase our economic security at the local level.

Social Action: Many of our economic challenges require action at the higher levels of state and national government.  Coming together, participants will discuss and take action on these issues to reclaim our economy from the reckless CEO’s, pundits, policy makers, and politicians that brought about the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.
