New Affinity Group - Women’s Sunday Study Circle - first meeting on 1/22/12

All women interested in participating in an ongoing life writing circle whose purpose is to foster community through writing and sharing are invited to join Betty McCreary, facilitator. There are three main types of groups at Wildflower Church:

  • Connection Circles are small groups of 5-10 people that meet at least monthly to build deeper community, nurture spiritual development, and explore topics using a set of materials designed by the Adult Programming Committee's Small Group Ministry Team and Rev. Eliza Galaher.
  • Covenant Groups are small groups initiated by members of the congregation who meet at least monthly to build deeper community and explore spiritual, ethical, and other issues that are selected by the particular group.
  • Affinity Groups are for those who wish to share common interests, areas of study, and hobbies. They are less structured than Connections Circles or Covenant Groups.

See the Weekly News announcements and the calendar for specific dates and locations.

We welcome the formation of new Covenant and Affinity groups.  To accomplish this, please  contact  .

Connection Circles

New Connection Circles will form in October.  Be sure to watch for further information.

Connection Circles are small groups of 5-10 people that meet at least monthly to build deeper community, and nurture spiritual development. We structure the groups to create opportunities for sharing around topics chosen to deepen our understanding of the foundations of our religious tradition. This year, each connection circle will follow the theme of Standing on the Side of Love. The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) affirms seven principles that capture the essence of our creedless faith. The covenant of the UUA also describes the "sources" of our living tradition:

  1. Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life.
  2. Words and deeds of prophetic women and men which challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love.
  3. Wisdom from the world's religions which inspires us in our ethical and spiritual life.
  4. Jewish and Christian teachings which call us to respond to God's love by loving our neighbors as ourselves.
  5. Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science, and warn us against idolatries of the mind and spirit.
  6. Spiritual teachings of earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.

Each connection circle is unique due to the diverse makeup of its members. However, each group has a facilitator and all groups follow a set curriculum. A typical meeting includes the following:

  • Welcome and chalice lighting
  • Check in-sharing what has been happening in each person’s life since last meeting
  • Opening reading
  • Topic discussion and activity
  • Wrap up and closing reading
  • Extinguish chalice and preview of the following month topic

In summary, each month we delve into the content, reflect on thought-provoking questions and share our personal stories and connection to the topics. And, we have fun activities and exercises that engage our heads, hearts and bodies.

Looking for a way to connect with other Wildflower members? Connection Circles just might be for you! Here is a sample of what current members say;

“I wish more people would take the opportunity to participate in these groups. I feel it can help to build a better sense of community in our congregation.”

“We have a nice group that is relaxed and comfortable together and it is fun to talk about UU stuff.”

“This is a rich and rewarding program. Thanks for organizing it.”

Currently, there are five active Connection Circles.  New members are welcome at any time.  If interested, contact Mary Ober or Sarita Rosen, team leaders for the Connection Circles Program within the Adult Programming Committee, at .
