 Wildflowers' Courses for Adults

We provide both adult religious education and life enrichment courses and workshops for Wildflowers.  The adult religious education courses support people on their spiritual journeys to have a place to explore Unitarian Universalism and other religious and spiritual traditions, engage in dialogue around critical questions that inform ones faith development, and explore current social justice issues.

Our life enrichment courses are much more diverse with learning experiences that are focused on developing us beyond the spiritual/religious dimension. We choose topics for courses and build our yearly schedule based on a periodic needs assessment (most recent spring 2011), their fit with the mission of Wildflower, and the willingness of facilitators to implement our ideas. Often courses are proposed by people who wish to teach a particular topic and share their enthusiasm with others.

The Gospels of Mary and Thomas

Come explore the Gnostic Gospels of Mary and Thomas with Annice Cook. Our discussion will enrich our understanding of a formative period for Christianity and engage us in considering the significance of the messages in these texts for our contemporary spiritual journey. The broad meaning of “gnosis” is “hidden spiritual knowledge” and, in particular, the Gospel of Mary Magdalene provides a new look at Jesus’ relationship with her. The Gospel of Thomas consists of parables of deep inward and symbolic meaning. Suggested reading: The Gnostic Gospels by Alan Jacobs, available on amazon.com for $8.95.

*Unitarian Universalism 102: Exploring the Principles of Our Faith

Join Mike and Tom for a discussion of the Seven Principles of Unitarian Universalism. This is one of the three courses we offer that directly relate to the history and grounding for our faith. The courses, UU 101, 102 and 103, are not dependent on one another but are excellent ways to build a foundation of this liberal religious tradition. The course will be based on the book, With Purpose and Principle: Essays about the Seven Principles of Unitarian Universalism. We will ask that you purchase the book (available for $12.00 or donation at the Adult Programming table). An easy read, barely 100 pages long, it will be the centerpiece of class discussion.

*Childcare provided upon weekly reservation; please indicate your need for this when you sign up for the course.

Immigration as a Moral Issue

Immigration as a Moral Issue is a UUA-sponsored curriculum designed to help Unitarian Universalists engage in this Congregational Study/Action Issue, voted on at the 2010 UUA General Assembly. This six-week program will explore the causes, history, and economics of migration and immigration; security, enforcement, and human rights; and who benefits from a broken system. Anyone planning to attend the special justice-centered General Assembly in Phoenix this summer is encouraged to take this class.

Rev. Eliza will provide readings through email for the first class for those who sign up. She strongly encourages all participants to supplement the class work by reading The Death of Josseline: Immigration Stories from the Arizona Borderlands. The book can be purchased at the Adult Programming table for $14.00 or donation..

FACILITATOR: Rev. Eliza Galaher DAY/TIME/DATES/PLACE: Sunday evening, 7-9 pm; Feb. 12,19,26, Mar. 4,11,18 (6 sessions), FPC Parlor

Money, Money, Money

What does it mean to stand on the side of love with our money? Through readings and discussion, Cathy Cramer will guide the exploration of this question, including how our upbringing influences our attitudes about money, how money influences our actions, and what we can do to help money enhance our life rather than rule it. Participants will be provided readings that evoke reflection and discussion on weekly topics.

FACILITATOR: Cathy Cramer DAY/TIME/DATES/PLACE: Sunday afternoon, 3-5 pm, Feb. 12,19,26 and March 4 (4 sessions), FPC Parlor
